About Japan Senga Association

Originally called “Sousetsu-kai”, Japan Senga Association was formally established in 1984 by the current chairman Ryosuke Ishida to enhance SENGA’s artistic value and establish its reputation throughout the world.
In Japan, the association holds the Annual Japan Senga Exhibition at Tokyo’s O Museum (2005 marked the 21st exhibition) and Tsukiyono Junkaiten (Tsukiyono Exhibition Tour) in Tsukiyono-City, Gunma prefecture. The association has been a recipient of cultural promotion fund sponsored by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (since 1994) as well as the support of the City of Tokyo (since 2002). Japan Senga Art Collection, published to coincide the Annual Japan Senga Exhibition, helps to introduce senga to the new audience.
In 2002, the association became a NPO (Non-Profit Organization) with the headquarter based in Saitama prefecture. The association currently has 7 local branches in Japan with each promoting number of SENGA-related activities in its area.

# Japan Senga Exhibition The annual Japan Senga Exhibition, supported by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, is held every spring (May~June) at O Museum in Tokyo. With more than 100 works submitted by our association members, the exhibition is our largest, and provides each member an opportunity to demonstrate his/her senga skills. It also functions as a gathering place for the members who normally live in different parts of Japan. Each year, the association selects a new official theme for the works to be entered into the Official Theme Category. The Free-Theme Category is for the artists who opt for the self-selected theme. There is also the Junior Category. For the 2005 exhibition, our 21st, the official theme is ASOBU (Having Fun). The best artist from each category is awarded a prize by the association. Each exhibition features 1 or 2 artists to show their work in chronological order. The dedicated exhibition space is secured for the purpose. Critique sessions and get-to-know meeting sessions for the association members are also held during the exhibition.
# Tsukiyono Junkaiten Every July, Tsukiyono Junkaiten (Tsukiyono Exhibition Tour) visits Tsukiyono Culture Center in Tsukiyono-City for 9 days. The exhibition - featuring works from the annual Japan Senga Exhibition - has received a reputation as one of Japan's best local art exhibitions. Those who wish are invited to attend our one-day senga workshop to learn basic senga techniques and chat with the association members.
# International Exhibitions Japan Senga Association (J.S.A.) is actively promoting senga in overseas through annual international exhibitions. In 2003, we held our very first international exhibitions in Montreal and New York City. In 2004, we held the second international exhibition in New York City. Each exhibition has received rave reviews from both the audience and critics for its delicate beauty and artistic value.
# Publication of Catalog Published every year since our very first exhibition, Japan Senga Art Collection is a catalog of works by the association members. Starting with 2001 edition, the catalog is published in color.
# Newsletter (Sengasho) Published twice a year, Sengasho contains member updates, technical information, essays and comments by both the association members and non-members. The newsletter functions as a valuable means of communication for our members living around the country.
# Additional Publications and Products In addition to Japan Senga Art Collection, we offer Senga Design Book, desktop calendars and high-quality senga paper to our members.
# Activities of Regional Branches Each of our regional branches sponsors sketching sessions, seminars, member gatherings and own exhibitions.
